NuristanThe situation in Nuristan went wild over the summer and problems continue. Although the schools are away from the main trouble centres, two villages received visits from representatives of extremist organisations who were sent away after a small military incident.
Meanwhile all the schools remain open like normal times . In fact the schools programme is even being supported by so-called extremist villages, where boys get a good religious education in well - funded madrassas but lack the basic literary skills taught in our co-ed schools.
The main effect of the troubles is on communication which means closed roads and scarcity of goods. Our mother and child health care project has been affected; Dr Zulaikha sent a letter saying she cannot come to Kabul because the road south has become impassable. Her report with photos is being sent out by messenger and details will hopefully appear in our next newsletter.
Funds were recently sent to Afghanistan for the following projects :- 1. Lumrukdesh School - for urgent repairs to building £1,123
2. Hydro Project - electric supply for three villages £4,200. (enabling one light for each house plus two school computers)
3. Shkek Dara Village - first instalment for new co-ed school £3,677
